Almost every car in India runs a small 12V battery that powers everything from the engine starter to the infotainment system. Unlike the giant lithium pack in an EV, this battery is old-school chemistry — lead plates in sulphuric acid — and it costs a couple of thousand rupees, not a couple of lakhs. But when it dies, your car doesn't start. What the 12V Battery Actually Does

The 12V battery has one primary job: spin the starter motor when you turn the key or press start. That takes a big burst of current — 200 to 600 amps — for a few seconds. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over: it powers all electrical systems and simultaneously recharges the battery.

In modern cars, the battery also runs a growing list of "key-off" loads: the alarm, immobiliser, clock, cabin memory settings, and (increasingly) always-on connected car modules. This is why leaving your car parked for 3-4 weeks can leave you with a flat battery even if it was healthy going in.

EVs have one too. Even fully electric cars carry a small 12V lead-acid battery separate from the main traction pack. It powers the low-voltage electronics before the main battery contactors close. Ironically, EV owners forget about this battery until it fails — and then their expensive EV won't start either.

Conventional Wet Cell vs Maintenance-Free

Almost every mainstream car in India comes with a maintenance-free (MF) battery. These are sealed and never need water top-ups. Conventional wet cells still exist in the market — they're cheaper, but they need periodic distilled-water top-ups and offer no meaningful benefit over MF batteries for the price difference. For most buyers replacing a stock battery: buy MF.

EFB and AGM — When You Actually Need Them

If your car has start-stop technology (the engine cuts out at traffic lights and restarts automatically), it needs an EFB or AGM battery. A regular lead-acid battery will fail within a year or two under start-stop cycling — the constant restart current wears it out fast. Never downgrade a car that came with EFB or AGM to a cheaper standard battery — you'll void warranties on the start-stop system and shorten the new battery's life dramatically.

How Long a Car Battery Actually Lasts

The theoretical life of a lead-acid battery is 5-7 years. In Indian conditions, real-world life is closer to 3-4 years for standard MF batteries and 4-6 years for AGM units. Several factors accelerate the decline:

Signs Your Battery Is Dying

Batteries usually give 2-4 weeks' warning before they die completely. Watch for:

Get it tested annually after year 3. Any Maruti, Hyundai or Tata service centre — and most independent battery shops — will run a free load test in 5 minutes. This measures the battery's cold cranking amps (CCA) vs its rated CCA. Anything under 70% means it's on borrowed time.

How to Safely Jump-Start a Car

Jump-starting is the single most common car emergency. Done right it takes 5 minutes; done wrong it can damage electronics in modern cars. The correct sequence:

  1. Position the cars. Park them nose-to-nose, close enough for jumper cables to reach both batteries. Both engines off. Both handbrakes on. Both in park or neutral.
  2. Identify the batteries. Most Indian cars have the battery under the bonnet. Some (VW Group, some Hyundais) have it in the boot. Locate the positive (+) and negative (–) terminals on both.
  3. Connect cables in this exact order:
    • Red cable — POSITIVE terminal of the dead battery
    • Red cable — POSITIVE terminal of the good battery
    • Black cable — NEGATIVE terminal of the good battery
    • Black cable — an unpainted metal earthing point on the dead car's engine block (NOT the dead battery's negative terminal, to avoid sparking near hydrogen gas from a discharged battery)
  4. Start the working car. Let it idle for 2-3 minutes to send charge into the dead battery.
  5. Start the dead car. It should crank strongly. If it doesn't, wait another 2 minutes and try again.
  6. Disconnect cables in reverse order once the previously-dead car is running:
    • Black cable from the engine block earth
    • Black cable from the good battery negative
    • Red cable from the good battery positive
    • Red cable from the previously-dead battery positive
  7. Drive the previously-dead car for at least 20-30 minutes to let the alternator fully recharge the battery. Don't shut off the engine immediately — you'll be back to square one.

Critical safety note for EVs and hybrids: Never connect jumper cables to an EV's high-voltage traction pack. Every EV and hybrid also has a small 12V auxiliary battery — that's the one you jump-start. Consult the owner's manual for the correct jump-start point (many EVs have designated posts under the bonnet, even though the actual battery is elsewhere).

How to compare quotes: Ask for the exact model number and its warranty duration in months (both "free replacement" and "pro-rated"). A ₹6,500 battery with 42 months full warranty is better value than a ₹6,000 battery with 24 months full warranty. Always insist on the warranty card being filled out at the shop.

Prices include battery + labour + old-battery exchange (usually ₹800-1,500 credit for the old unit). Always ask for the old battery to be taken away — it must be recycled and by law can't be dumped.

How long does a 12V car battery actually last in India?

Realistically 3-4 years for a conventional maintenance-free unit under typical Indian conditions. AGM batteries in modern cars with start-stop last 4-6 years. If yours has crossed 3 years, get it load-tested annually — replacement before it fails is much cheaper than getting stranded.

Which is the best brand — Exide or Amaron?

Is it worth buying a battery online vs at a shop?
