Example: A car claiming 500 km range will realistically deliver 320–370 km. Plan your long trips accordingly — charge to 80% before a highway trip and locate charging stations in advance.
Home charging (AC slow charger): Most convenient, installs in your parking space, takes 6–8 hours for a full charge. Costs roughly ₹150–300 per full charge depending on electricity tariff.
Public DC fast chargers: 30–60 minutes to 80%. Available at highways, malls and petrol stations in major cities. Tata Power, ATHER Grid, ChargeZone and BPCL are expanding fast.
Petrol car: ₹6–8 per km at ₹100/litre, 15 kmpl. EV: ₹1–2 per km on home charging. If you drive 1500 km/month, you save approximately ₹7,000–10,000/month on fuel alone — ₹84,000–1.2 lakh per year.
FAME II subsidy: Available on some EVs, reduces purchase price by ₹10,000–1.5 lakh depending on battery size. State subsidies: Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat offer additional incentives. Income tax benefit: Section 80EEB allows deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh on EV loan interest.
Road tax exemption: Most states exempt EVs from road tax, saving ₹30,000–1 lakh depending on vehicle price.
Avoid buying an EV if: You live in an apartment without dedicated parking or charging access. You regularly drive 400+ km highway trips without planning. Your city has very limited public charging infrastructure. You need to transport the car to remote rural areas frequently.
