Car Insurance Guide India 2026
Understand your policy and avoid being underinsured

By SahiCar.in TeamUpdated June 2026
Car insurance in India is mandatory by law, but most people don't fully understand what they're buying. This guide explains the difference between coverage types, how to set the right IDV, how to protect your No Claim Bonus and which add-ons are actually worth paying for.
1
Third-Party vs Comprehensive Insurance
The most important decision

Third-party insurance (mandatory by law): Covers damage you cause to other people's vehicles or property. Does NOT cover damage to your own car.

Comprehensive insurance (strongly recommended): Covers both third-party liability AND damage to your own car from accidents, theft, natural disasters and fire. Always choose comprehensive for a new car.

2
What is IDV and Why It Matters
Insured Declared Value — don't set it too low

IDV is the maximum amount your insurer pays if your car is stolen or totalled. It's based on the car's current market value minus depreciation.

Never set IDV too low just to save on premium — if your car is stolen, you'll only get the IDV amount. Set it as close to the actual market value as possible.

3
No Claim Bonus (NCB)
Your most valuable insurance asset

NCB is a discount on your premium for every claim-free year — starts at 20% after Year 1 and goes up to 50% after 5 consecutive claim-free years.

Never make a small claim that's less than your NCB benefit — it's better to pay a small repair out of pocket and protect your NCB.

4
Add-Ons Worth Buying
Pay for these, skip the rest

Zero Depreciation cover: Pays the full replacement cost of parts without depreciation deduction. Essential for cars under 5 years old — worth every rupee.

Engine Protection cover: Covers engine damage from waterlogging — important in cities prone to flooding. Roadside Assistance: Very useful for breakdown or tyre punctures.

Skip: PA cover for passengers (you have separate life insurance), consumables cover for basic services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is comprehensive insurance compulsory in India? +
Third-party insurance is legally mandatory. Comprehensive insurance is optional but highly recommended for any new car — the additional premium is small compared to the coverage you get.
How do I reduce my car insurance premium legally? +
Maintain a claim-free record to build NCB (up to 50% discount). Install an approved anti-theft device for 2.5% discount. Opt for higher voluntary deductible if you're a careful driver. Compare quotes from at least 3 insurers — rates vary significantly.
Can I transfer my NCB to a new car? +
Yes — No Claim Bonus belongs to you as the policyholder, not to the car. When you buy a new car, you can transfer your accumulated NCB to the new policy.
